October Studies

This was my second month following Paul Scott Canavan’s twitch stream. On Mondays and Fridays, the stream format is called “Study Buddies”. Everybody does two timed studies together and afterward we share them on Twitter under #StudyBuddies.

I swear these sessions are so helpful for learning and improving at art! I feel like I’ve made so much progress with my digital art in the past two months and really broke through a learning barrier.

Spooky still-life

The stream has a subtle Furby theme, so I added one here. I liked my candles and lemon, but I need to spend some time learning how to draw flowers.

Viking Lady

I tend to try and make all of the facial features too big. Definitely made her look pretty cartoony but I kind of like it. And I didn’t have enough time to do any of the fabric textures.

Armor

I knew if I tried to draw the face, I wouldn’t get to the armor so I decided to skip it. Even so, I spent way too much time trying to lay in the flat colors.

Froggy

I was pretty happy with my froggy. I made him a little chonky and a little cartoony, but it kind of works. I’d like to do a study focusing more on the skin textures.

I think I put the figure in fairly accurately and got to do a rough render of the face.

I was really happy with this one. I lost a lot of the facial similarity in the 1 hour study, but learned a lot about painting skin. Then when I spent more time on it I got it to a point I really like.

I decided to give her stylish eyelashes.

This painting had really amazing colors. I spent a few extra hours trying to clean mine up, but I would need SO MUCH more time to start getting close to the reference.

What an amazing reference photo and what a mess I made out of it… Sometimes these 1 hour studies really don’t come together.

I spent a few more hours working on it to improve it. I still didn’t really get the likeness to the model’s face but at least it looks like a person now! And I was very pleased with the armor.

I still haven’t learned to paint flowers. It’s okay, I swear I’ll get to it :)

This was so much fun to work on and I actually loved my result. During the timed study, I made her look a little witchy, but I was able to fix that pretty quickly later.

I really liked both of the ones I did on the 30th. I was playing with a new Photoshop Brush that utilized “transfer”. It helped get a blended look without losing too much feature definition.
