November Studies
This was my third month following Paul Scott Canavan’s twitch stream. On Mondays and Fridays, the stream format is called “Study Buddies”. Everybody does timed studies together (usually two 1 hour studies) and afterward we share them on Twitter under #StudyBuddies.
This month we experimented with the format of the studies by doing some more freeform sessions where people could choose studies from many options.
November 02:
Anders Zorn
I tried to play with looser brushstrokes for this one and it was super satisfying. I totally lost the likeness in the face though.
Car
This was the first car I’ve drawn since elementary school. And I don’t see myself trying again any time soon.
October 06:
Sunset Beach
I was really happy with this one. I omitted the figures because I knew I wouldn’t have time to focus on them.
Whales
November 09:
Shishkin
November 13:
Bhaje Caves
I really struggled with this one. It felt like my brain just couldn’t make sense of the organic textures up against the crisp architecture.
Wonderpus
November 16:
Film Study
October 19:
Cynthia Sheppard Painting
Karla Ortiz Painting
We had a lot of choices for our studies this time. I chose these two because the second one by Karla Ortiz is one of my all-time favorite Magic paintings. Then I thought the beautiful angel by Cynthia Sheppard would be a good warmup. But then I didn’t get into rendering at all on the Karla Ortiz piece.
November 23:
Impressionistic Flowers
For this session, everybody submitted an image they wanted to study. I brought this painting of flowers to finally practice painting them. I learned a lot from it.
Waterhouse painting
Then for the second study, we chose another buddy’s submission. I chose this beautiful Waterhouse painting because it had more flowers. I really love the style of this painting though. I’d like to do a longer pass at it to try and replicate the brushwork.
October 27:
Bust
This was the statue study for the month. Next time we do a statue, I’m starting with the hair! Otherwise I never leave enough time for it.
Owl
November 30:
Ruffled Dress
Bust
I spent two hours on this study. The first hour was on the sketch and rendering out the face. The second hour was spent trying to render the fabric.
