Hades Fanart
I’ve been playing Hades and am of course in love with all of the character art. The design for that game is so beautiful. I’m VERY bad at actually playing the game, so I get to go back to the mansion and chat with Nyx frequently.
I’ve been wanting to push myself to finish a “Magic style” painting (hoping to measure my progress). So I thought it would be a good idea to try and place Nyx into Theros as one of the gods.
I’m really really happy with how it turned out. I think I could have spent a few more hours refining the finish on her clothes and jewelry, but I also felt like I was done.

I started with a detailed reference board, following advice from artists I follow.

Putting the time in to build the reference board before I started drawing was super helpful. It meant I solved a lot of problems and planned it out before I started fiddling with drawing.
Then while painting, I was able to easily view all of my reference and inspiration photos.
First, I started with a rough sketch.
Next I refined the figure using a reference photo.
Then I blocked in a lot of flattish colors
I toyed with using a different pose, but didn’t really like it.
I added some rough shading to the figure.
Adding clouds and stars started to make it look nice.
A lot more detail on the figure and experimenting with the landscape.
It was pretty close to done here, but I had lost a lot of the contrast I needed.
The finished picture, one of the last things I did was try to make the dangly cloth look more voluminous.
