Emrakul Kigurumi

I want to make this kigurumi for the Desertbus Craft-along.

It’s designed to look like one of Magic the Gathering’s biggest baddies, Emrakul!

The kigu will blend the two different versions of the artwork:

  • Main torso and color palette are from Mark Tedin’s Rise of the Eldrazi painting

  • Mushroom hood and drapey tentacles loosely based on Jaime Jones’s Eldritch Moon painting

Fabric Patterns

I custom painted three different fabric patterns for the kigu. Each of them tiles to form the repeating pattern. Then they’re all printed onto polar fleece. I’ve already gotten a test print and love the way these look!

The pink writhy tentacles form the main mass on the torso. They’re more loosely packed here, and show through into the depths of the monster.

Then they become more densely packed and give way to a wriggly muscular mess of limbs. There’s also a shift into the blues of the color palette.

The hood and the tentacles are primarily dark purple and black and are primarily one mass. The fabric looks more like brush strokes.

When I went to MagicFest Reno in February, a few people were wearing kigurumis, including a couple of really great Magic cosplayers. We all got to talking about what other characters would be great to kigu-cosplay. I plan to make one of these as a gift for a friend, but as I was designing the fabrics, I decided it would also be fun to submit it to the craft-along! I’ve wanted to submit a craft for years, but haven’t found the right overlap between my skills/interest and the required ship-ability. Sadly mailing cakes is not ideal for an online auction :(

See part 2 for finished photos of the kigurumi!

Kruphix, God of Horizons

This was my first onesie, and a great learning experience.

It’s more form-fitting because I was making it for myself (I prefer a snug fit). Traditionally kigus are a lot looser.

I worked with a basic onesie pattern and added the extra arms.

Another Magic costume, this nightmare squirrel is from Ikoria.

For this costume, I added to the onesie with additional arms, webbed wings, facial details, and two tails.
